PROGRESSION

Premise

Progression is a key focus of our work with our learners. We believe that if the engagement of the learner is consistent and fit for their purpose then the basis for progress is laid.

How is Progression monitored?

Progression is evidenced by achievement of set targets set by teaching staff in line with the outcomes stated in the individual learner’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and the programme offer.

We highlight progress in the learning journey by explicitly establishing a starting point from which new learning and understanding can be measured and we track learners’ grasp of essential knowledge and educational skills in each subject area and make plans for the next stage.

We make judgments on learners’ progress by determining their learning journey against the following benchmarks:

  1. Emerging Pupils have been taught the skill but rarely are able to apply their understanding
  2. Developing Pupils begin to apply their understanding – this is usually with the support of a teacher or adult
  3. Secure They are consistently working at this level.
  4. Mastery Pupils are able to apply key skills across a range of curriculum areas without explicit teaching

Progression: Preparing for Next Steps

Ultimately, our focus is to equip our learners for active participation in the world of employment, lifelong learning and by setting and realising their dreams. To achieve this we provide ongoing in-house guidance about next step options beyond our school as well as engaging the services of an external guidance counsellor who works with individual learners around their progression pathways. We also take our learners to job fairs and other events that fire their imagination about what might be possible for them in the future.

Supporting Progression

Over the years, we have developed good relationships with colleges and other post-16 provides so that we are able to work with these places as our learners settle into the new learning or employment-related learning environments.

We have found that working this way reduces attrition and promotes engagement in the learner’s next step option.
